Support Services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People

January 26th can be a hard day for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. The effects of colonization and the Stolen Generation are an ongoing challenge for many, and the public events around this day can cause grief and distress for some people.

PHONE SUPPORT

13-YARN (13 92 76) is a free, confidential service run by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who will understand where you are coming from and value knowing HOW to listen, without judgement or shame.

They provide crisis support 24/7 where you can yarn without judgement in culturally safe space, discuss your needs, worries or concerns. Call 13 92 76.

Thirrili offers free 24/7 practical and emotional support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities impacted or affected following the event of a suicide or traumatic incident causing death.

Well Mob have social, emotional and cultural wellbeing resources put together by mob for mob and others on a range of topics to help with healing.

HeadSpace Indigenous Youth Online Support has online resources including a social and emotional wellness wheel to help you figure out how to keep strong in body, culture, identity, mind and more.

Strong Spirit Strong Mind has a collection of online resources for social and emotional wellbeing including information on mental health, alcohol and other drugs, and links to other services that can help.

IN PERSON SUPPORT

Derbal Yerrigan Health Service offers a confidential and professional counselling service in a few locations around the metro area that supports people to work through their challenges.

Mooditj Yarning (through Relationships Australia) offer counselling for individuals, couples and children (6 years old and over), and are experienced in supporting people with relationship difficulties family violence, anger issues, managing stress, drug and alcohol issues grief and loss through the healing power of yarning.

Djinda Service (through Relationships Australia) is a free support service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children experiencing family violence. Djinda is a Noongar word meaning ‘star’. The stars represent women who guide families, shine brightly, survive against the odds and are strong in determination to keep their families safe.

Moorditj Djerpin Wirrin (through Richmond Wellbeing) This strengths-based outreach service is for and delivered by Aboriginal people. All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are welcome. Working at grassroots, we address intergenerational trauma holistically to build a strong kinship and spirit.

Babbingur Mia (through South Coastal Health & Community Services). The workers at Babbingur Mia collaborate to support the health and social and emotional well-being of Aboriginal women, children, new mums, expectant mums, adolescents and adults.
